One of the most popular items in our list of goods and services, the A series gearbox is a well known weak point on the car made worse by manufacturing tolerances not being what they should be, this became more of an issue with the introduction of the mpi mini from 1996 these models where notorious for transmission failiure after very low mileage, causes were 2nd gear syncro problems, incorrect oil grade specified, and higher wear rates bought about by high final drive ratios and an engine that never went out of tune due to the engine managment system thus full torque constantly going through the gearbox, layshafts can wear prematurly due to the high gearing where motorway acceleration in 3rd gear puts more strain on the layshaft and bearings.Coupled with centre main bearing breakups that became common around the time the metro appeared a properly built gearbox is a must for reliability.

Increasing power/torque output also puts the gearbox under more strain, with a helical box its not possible to make it totally bullet proof but careful assembly selecting the best parts and very regular servicing can make the gearbox last a lot longer.

Service Exchange Gearbox

Our base option for rebuilt gearboxes, each unit is stripped cleaned and inspected and worn parts only replaced helping to keep costs down, all are exchange and we stock a selection of these with different final drive ratios ready to fit. We have supplied many of these now and have found they give excellent service, also suitable for mpi minis.

This gearbox option should also be used at the least when fitting a newly rebuilt engine.




Ultimate Gearbox builds

This option is a fully rebuilt gearbox, once stripped the case and castings are dipped and inspected, all threads cleaned, selector forks modified to give a smooth shoft, selector rod checked for operation and re-worked to ensure longer rod oil seal life, gear cluster fully inspected and cleaned, gears replaced as required, all bearings roller and needle replaced, new shafts inc reverse gear and bushes, new idler gear bearings, central oil pick up pipe, Differential fully rebuilt or fit twin cross pin/LSD/ATB diffs can be specified. Straight cut gears can also be specified inc dog engagment. Speedo drive gears are also optmised for final drive ratio and speedo head used.

We use only 20/50 oil in all our gearboxes and reccomend oil changes every 3000miles

We also offer the same services for drop gears, clutch and flywheel, inc lightened and balanced assemblies inc blueprinted assys where clutch plate to flywheel pressure is optimised for road to race use.
